Netflix says: When upstanding Texas cop Steven Russell (Jim Carrey) realizes he's gay, he changes his entire life and pulls a series of bold con jobs that lands him jail -- where he meets his one true love, cellmate Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor). When Morris is transferred to another prison, lovesick Russell mounts a series of jailbreaks just to be with his beloved soul mate. Glenn Ficarra and John Requa direct this comedy based on a true story.
Matt says: It’s a shame that people are so closed-minded that this movie got shelved multiple times, passed around by distributors, and eventually never got more than a brief run in indie houses. It’s a very funny, touching movie. So it has simulated man-on-man sex, scenes of Carrey and McGregor making out, and shows that people of the same gender can actually feel genuine love for each other without hiding it and getting all cowboy-angsty about it. Who cares? It’s a solid romantic comedy/drama. That it’s a true story makes it all the more entertaining. McGregor does a great job with his role, but movie is all Carrey’s. He brings his incredible comedic styling to the film, giving his portrayal of Russell an undeniable charm. Say what you will about his choice of early roles, and his unfortunate stabs at the serious, but when given the right character he really does shine. If you believe homosexual love is an affront to god, then I suggest you go ahead and skip this one. If you’re open-minded enough to to know that it is normal to accept all consensual love in a progressive society, your reward will be a great film. 4 stars.
