Netflix says: Death-obsessed teen Harold Chasen (Bud Cort) is being hassled by his domineering mother (Vivian Pickles) to play the dating game, but he'd much rather attend funerals, which is where he meets the feisty Maude (Ruth Gordon), a geriatric widow who's high on life. The seemingly mismatched pair forms a bond that turns into a highly unconventional -- but ultimately satisfying – romance in this comical cult favorite from director Hal Ashby.
Matt says: An extremely amusing and amazingly heartfelt movie about love, life, and death; “Harold and Maude” should be on everyone’s list as an essential watch. It looks beyond our daily doldrums and insecurities to what really matters in this world. The main character, Harold, is obsessed with death. His life is boring and unpleasant and he resorts to faking suicide to get attention. His obsession with death leads him to attend funerals of people he doesn’t know in order to try to comprehend his own miserable existence. When he meets a free-spirited septuagenarian named Maude, she shows him that death is a natural occurrence and part of the cycle of life… and most importantly, though mortality is something to always be aware of, it’s nothing to dwell too much upon. Though their relationship, Harold gains an appreciation for what life has to offer; that we are only on this world for a brief time and we need to indulge in the positivity, exploration, and joy while we’re here. They are kindred spirits separated by age, but drawn together so that their age difference doesn’t matter. Hilarious at times and touching at others, this movie is the perfect example of a meaningful, insightful film. And, with an extraordinary soundtrack by Cat Stevens, the emotional levels are heightened beautifully. If you haven’t seen this, you must. Not only will you laugh and cry, but you will feel enriched by it. 5 stars.
